Alto believes in the importance of a globally-minded, progressive education.
Founded in 1988, Alto International School is an accredited International Baccalaureate World School in Menlo Park. Every day, students from all over the world are engaged in a stimulating learning environment where positive dialogue, curiosity, and innovative approaches to problem-solving are encouraged. From preschool to high school, students are exposed to an inquiry-based learning methodology that actively involves them in the learning process.
Alto’s middle and high school program offers students a unique preparatory education providing them with the necessary skills for university and life beyond. English is the primary language of instruction, but students graduate with literacy skills in at least two languages. For younger students, the school offers a German-immersion preschool and elementary school program, educating engaged, independent, and balanced learners. Alto’s preschool and kindergarten programs promote play-based learning where children develop new understandings and competencies through hands-on experiences and opportunities to discuss and reflect. In play, children deepen interpersonal relationships, make connections between ideas, and are encouraged to try something new every day.
As an IB World School since 2007, Alto focuses on a holistic approach to education. The IB program at Alto addresses not only cognitive development and academic rigor but also places great value on the social-emotional and physical well-being of every student.

The IB program is highly recognized by universities in the United States and around the world. Samuel Carpenter, Senior Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admission at Duke University says: “The IB program offers an educational experience that fosters a global perspective while developing the intellectual and societal skills that prepares students for not just higher education but life in an ever-changing world. Students become more engaged in the process of learning, simply because they learn to learn." Students report that their involvement with the IB has given them the tools needed to succeed in college. Former IB students comment in particular on their strong research and time management skills as well as a general sense of preparedness leading to higher self-confidence. Even more importantly, they have developed an understanding of the world around them and their responsibility towards it.
Alto believes that the world needs young people eager to take on today’s and tomorrow’s challenges. Alto International School equips students with the skills and confidence to contribute to making our world a better place.
